The project will see local volunteers collecting beach-cast seagrass material when walking the shoreline after storms. The shoots will be held in simple nursery pools, with viable material planted into prepared plots within the restoration site. Using shore-cast material means the project can begin during the winter months. Harnessing the power of the storms to bring seagrass onto local beaches, whilst not causing any additional disturbance to existing seagrass beds. The Barra and Vatersay Seagrass Restoration Project offers a clear opportunity to build on significant local groundwork and contribute meaningfully to large-scale seagrass recovery across Scotland. SMEEF has been able to commit to a grant of £90,710 to support this work between 2026-28 using resources donated by SSEN Distribution to SMEEF.
