Piloting a cost effective and highly scalable method of seagrass restoration which can be replicated by communities around the coastline. This project will deliver a pilot demonstration of the Buoy Deployed Seeding (BuDS) method of seagrass restoration. Developed in the USA (Pickerell et al., 2005), this method closely mimics nature by passively dispersing seeds via natural wave action. The approach enhances natural recovery and has proven effective in establishing new seagrass areas. Its minimal infrastructure requirements make it highly suitable for remote and island contexts, representing strong value for money and replicability. Deployment will target areas of seagrass previously damaged by mooring, maximising ecological gain while testing site-specific effectiveness. The project will generate measurable biodiversity enhancement, test innovative restoration approaches, and provide a practical model for cost-effective, community-led seabed recovery. SMEEF has been able to commit to a grant of £80.850 to support this work between 2026-28 using resources donated by SSEN Distribution to SMEEF.
