Species on the Edge – Machair

This project saw multi-species and habitat conservation happening in the Outer Hebrides. Working closely with crofters across the Outer Hebrides to improve the fortunes of rare and declining species on machair and associated habitats, the project’s aim was to increase the viability of cattle grazing, increase biodiversity, and improve soil health on these fragile coastal habitats.

Project Officers connected with crofters about the use of NoFence collars including reviewing the impact of grazing, helping set up the collars and arranging replacements for a faulty collar. No fence collars have the potential to support a wide range of efforts to reduce pressure on fragile ecosystems including machair and saltmarsh.

In 2023 SMEEF was able to provide a grant of £5,525 to support this work using resources from the Nature Restoration Fund.
