About

The Scottish Marine Environmental Enhancement Fund (SMEEF) is an innovative nature finance vehicle that facilitates investment in marine and coastal enhancement in Scotland.

Formally launched in May 2022, SMEEF has so far secured and distributed nearly £10 million to more than 100 resilience and enhancement projects in Scottish coasts and seas.

Through SMEEF users – and enthusiasts – of Scottish waters are able to re-invest in the health and biodiversity of our seas by contributing to the Fund. The grants are then allocated to enhancement projects through targeted funding rounds or direct grants to overcome strategic barriers.

You can find out more about our contributors and their impact in our impact report below.

What makes SMEEF different to other funders?

SMEEF is a partnership between NatureScot, Scottish Government and Crown Estate Scotland. The placement of the Fund puts exceptional insight at our fingertips and ensures robust governance and transparency in all we do.

  • We are a bold, hopeful and ambitious programme
  • We know there is a better future possible for our seas and coasts, and we are determined to play our part in making it happen
  • We promise to play fair with the money we receive, supporting communities to deliver what is right for them

Why do we need SMEEF?

The climate and biodiversity emergency has been recognised by the Scottish Government and with growing public awareness the appetite for action has never been higher.

The Green Finance Institute estimates that around £20 billion is needed to restore nature in Scotland; SMEEF is a crucial funding instrument designed to help achieve this investment.

SMEEF recognises that Scotland’s seas are not only an incredibly rich natural resource with huge restoration potential, but are also loved and used by many. Unfortunately, Scottish marine waters receive only a limited amount of financial support compared to similar restoration activities on land. We aim to change that.

What will SMEEF achieve?

SMEEF is designed to be an effective, science led long-term funding mechanism that will:

  1. Enable enhancement of marine species and habitats and address the biodiversity and climate emergencies
  2. Take a systems view, connecting interventions, considering full ecosystems and life cycles across the Scottish marine seascape
  3. Provide demonstrable corporate social responsibility opportunities, and
  4. Encourage wider research and development.
