What is ‘Investment readiness’?

SMEEF is keen to support ‘investment readiness’ (IR) in marine and coastal restoration. IR means a project can ‘sell’ goods and services to make a return on investment. This may mean carbon or biodiversity credits or other ways of making revenue from the natural capital made available by your project.

Standardisation of credits is challenging and a number of programmes are underway to try to make it easier and to create consistent standards.

One of the issues with credits is the need to secure them over long periods of time. This means the ownership or control of the land or seabed you are working with needs to be certain and there is a long term commitment to the project.
